I was surprised to see so many new and used Zastavas-M57's listed at very resonable prices. Are they any good?

Be aware that the aftermarket manual safety that was added to make them importable, might or might not cause problems. Also might have a negative affect on trigger pull. 0 -
I eliminated the thumb safeties on mine. I replaced them on each gun with a crosspin which is cut for sear clearance on the front, and which is also cut on top so that it is locked into the frame by the hammer housing, which prevents both lateral movement and rotation when the pistol is assembled. This returns the pistol to 'stock' operation.
The triggers on mine are a little stiff on the break, but I find that to be acceptable in a defense gun.
I like the captive recoil spring, and the firing pin redesign which enables ready firing pin removal (albeit a little more complicated than a 1911). The front sight is also dovetailed in, which promotes replaceability, and the magazine release is larger. The longer grip is the best of the features, giving the gun a very comfortable hold.
On the Russian veteran's website 'Iremember.ru', are numerous stories that testify to the 7.62x25's excellent combat effectiveness. I've so far come across 14 anecdotes involving single torso hits, which resulted in 13 DRT's. The 14th was recounted by an opposing German, who said he was hit in the left lung and was knocked out by the strike (he got a long stay in a hospital).0 -
Thanks for the info. I have a CZ-52 and lots of ammo. I agree about the safety. I was suprised to see NIB ones that had safeties. I assumed that the safeties were added to the original Russian made guns but the later guns had factory made safeties. True? 0 -
The military surplus Yugo M57's that are imported, have a frame-mounted safety that is added to comply with import requirements. The commercial M57's have a factory safety, and it is slide-mounted. So does the M70 version of the same pistol, which is produced in 9x19 (there is another Yugo pistol that is also designated as 'M70', which is not the Tokarev and should not be confused with them).
In short, Yugo military surplus Tokarevs will have an 'aftermarket' frame-mounted safety, and the Yugo commercials will have a factory slide-mounted safety.
Tokarevs imported from other countries have various kinds of safeties added in various locations on the pistols. Russian-made Tokarevs have only been rarely imported, and in very small numbers.0 -
Decent handguns. Eats surplus 7.62x25 no problem. Buy one while you still can. 0
