Drug out a safe queen yesterday, some opinions on it.
Got it at Roses around '92 or so, paid $40.00 for it.
Receiver is hexagon
Made by New England Westinghouse.
Odd characters on the rear sight that have been struck out
Has "SA" stamped on the side of the receiver, stamping does not match the rest of the letters in size.
Bore is rough but it shoots very well.
The last 4" or so of the barrel is not rifled, looks to be 35 caliber so so in that area, again, shoots very well with about any ammo.
Very smooth action compared to others I have handled, very light trigger.
Most numbers match, some struck through and re-numbered.
Stock pretty rough, missing the upper hand guard.

New England Westinghouse is what later became Savage. Your rifle was purchased by the Czar's government, and was later captured by the Finns in the Winter War. The SA mark is acceptance by the Finnish Army, and that't why you have so many number line outs and re-stamps.
The oversize muzzle is a counter bore that was done to restore accuracy after the muzzle was damaged. That was a common alteration.
With a new handguard, it might be worth 250-300 dollars.

I often see comments on hexagonal, or "hex" receivers on these rifles. The receiver on mine is octagonal. Are there actually 6-sided receivers or are they 8-sided like the "hex" barrels on the old Winchester lever guns? 0 -

Actually, they are neither. If you pull one out of the wood, you will find that the top of the receiver is profiled with five flats, and the underside is a rounded profile leading onto a machined flat with the square recoil lug and the magazine recess.
They are commonly called hex receivers, however, I don't know why.

You are lucky with a light trigger. I replaced mine with a Timmney trigger & it's perfect now. 0 -
[SA] means the rifle was reworked in Finland.

The early Mosin rear sights were marked in 'Arshins', a unit of measure that was about 30 inches, or the length of an average man's stride. 0
