Why have cases begun to stick in an S&W
686. .357. After they cool, they are removable from the cylinder. .38 Spl. cases don't stick.

Sounds like build up of gunk in the cylinder from the shorter 38 Special rounds. Clean cylinder with tight brush and a good solvent like Shooter's Choice. 0 -
Charlie is right on [;)] When you shoot the shorter 38,s in a 357 it leaves some lead and powder build up at the ridge in the cylinder. 0 -
A very mild abrasive ---- JB Bore Paste ---- works well if solvent doesn't do it.

.357 magnum cases also expand slightly when fired because they get so hot. They contract on cooling. That's why they fall out easily when cool, but stick when hot.
Fouling from previously fired .38s definitely may be a contributing factor, but 357s in particular are known for this issue, and it can happen even with perfectly clean cylinders.
In a pinch, a good solid "smack" on the ejector rod will usually knock them loose.0 -
I don't use them on bores, but Hoppes makes a spiral wound, stainless steel item that works well for cleaning revolver chambers.

A bore brush chucked into your electric hand drill does wonders. If the brush is insufficient, a small amount of 0000 steel wool wrapped around the brush will put a mirror shine in those revolver chambers. Then, before you shoot, run an oily patch through each. That will help keep anything from sticking. 0 -
