Leupold M-8 scope
I have a Leupold M8-6X scope that was purchased in 1980. The size of the objective lens looks less than 42mm. Looks more like 37mm or so. Would it be 37 or 38?? I see the newer ones are marked M8-6X42. What say you? Thanks.

Measure it. 42mm is just over 1 5/8 inches in our English measurement. 37mm would be a little under 1 1/2 inches. 0 -

Mine measured 37, so I guess 36mm is the size. Any ideas on the value? Mine is near new with box, packing and papers. Getting OLD and need to start getting rid of some stuff. Thanks again. 0 -

They are kind of a tough sell. With magnification that high most people tend to go with 3x9's. However I personally like them and I've bought and sold a few here in the $175-$200 range depending on reticule and condition/finish.

Because Leupold found them expensive to make, because no one wanted them that much, their initial purchase price was higher than it should have been. When variable power came out the public was all over it. They no longer wanted a fixed power scope. Too much or too little was always the thinking. So, setting up to make a run of fixed power scopes parts (even though simpler) and, knowing almost 1/2 of them won't sell in a timely manner, was the big cost.
In reality, they are nothing more than a good 6x scope. I thought mine was flat out great! I used it from 25 yds. to 550 yds with great effect. But I couldn't see any clearer with it than any variable power Leupold of it's day at 6x. I could more of what I wanted with a higher power. Or less if I needed to.
However, most people who own(ed) them think that manufacturing pricing issue should be transferred on to the next buyer. If you want one bad enough, I guess then it's worth it. Other than that they are about the same quality as the then Vari-X scopes Leupold had up for sale...except they couldn't go from 3x to 9x.0 -
I LOVE fixed 6x scopes. As far as I am concerned they are the best scope for any sort of open country- better than a variable because the shooter can learn what a target at the various ranges appear and not be playing around with the power dial. If you are interested in selling it, I'm interested in adding it to my collection. 0 -
I have two Leupold M8 six power scopes. Both have 42 mm objective lenses, and are marked 6X42. One is matte finished, and one is gloss.
Both have been back to Leupold service for reticle changes to German # 1 three post style. Both originally were dual-x
Excellent scopes and I would recommend them to anyone.

I love 6X scopes also. My next favorite is 4X. Shots at 400 yards are rare. My variable power scopes rarely change the power setting. 0 -
