Best bayonet for AR-15 type rifle?
This is a little "old school", but what's the best bayonet available for an AR-15 rifle?
By "best", I mean something that functions best as a knife OFF the rifle, but could also be used to fix as a bayonet, if necessary.
It doesn't have to be an actual military issue blade; just something good.
I've got an M7, and its fine as a bayonet, but its just not great as an actual knife.
Is the newer OKC3S basically the "best" bayonet around? Is there something else (maybe purely commercial, or used by some military other than the US) that's better?
Note, I'm sure this is very effective as a cutting tool, but its a little bit too bulky" for my taste: [;)]

Well, I'm not exactly engaging in trench warfare here. I figure that to the extent it gets used at all, the knife in question is going to be used 98%+ of the time as a knife. The 2% (or less) of the time its actually going to be attached to a rifle, its mostly for visual intimidation. The likelihood of me actually stabbing someone/something with a bayonet attached to a rifle isn't exactly zero, but its pretty darn close. So my take on this is that the bayonet needs to be mostly an excellent knife, and if it is, it "ought" to hold up to infrequent use as a bayonet, should things ever come to that.
On tanto bayonets, I've actually seen two models. One looks like pure junk/fantasy material (ie this one: http://www.trueswords.com/extreme-duty-bayonet-tanto-knife-fits-assault-rifles-ar15-p-6076.html ). The other is an Ontario OKC-10, sort of like the Marine issue bayonet, but with a tanto blade. Its not entirely clear to me what (if any) advantage this one has over the more conventional bayonet, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Generally speaking, bayonets make for poor knives. The steel temper suitable for bayonets is too soft to take/hold a good edge. The steel temper that will take/hold a good edge, is too hard and brittle to stand up to use as a bayonet. However, the newer bayonets like the U.S. M9 and OKC-3S; and AES (Eickhorn) Bayonet System 2000/2005 come as close to true dual-purpose bayonet-knives as has been achieved to date. 0 -
Suggestion from 2 tour Iraq vet:a good knife for cutting and a gnarly muzzle device for prodding. Multitool for most everything else. 0 -
The Eickhorn type bayonets are pretty decent and they also include the wire cutter feature and are partly serrated but like others have said bayonets aren't exactly sharp.
The scabbard also has a screw driver tip and the wire cutter can also be used to open bottles. This one has the 10" blade.
