muzzle loading primers
Can muzzle loading primers be used in regular shotgun reloading? Posted this on the reloading site, but I need a answer quick. Thanks

yes they should fit, as I use shotgun primers in my muzzleloaders, I'm not sure if one would be hotter than any other. do you know the brand we are talking about???? 0 -
A muzzle loader will either take a #11 percussion cap or a 209 shotgun primer...
So maybe? Depends on what kind of muzzle loader you have...0 -
Some ML 209 primers are lower powered than common shotgun 209 primers.
I shoot BlackHorn 209 in my Knight inline. BH requires a full strength 209 primer vs a ML specific 209 primer. Shotgun 209's cause the striker to recock 75% of the time while ML 209's almost never do that.0 -
I just want to know if I can use Winchester 209 primers marked for muzzle loaders only for shotshell reloading. Can't understand why both muzzle loader and shotshell primers are both marked 209. Anyone have any coments on that? Thanks 0 -

Same physical size. But, the shotgun ones will have more "flash" to them. You may be able to use the weaker ML 209s for shotgun shell reloading, but you may experience misfires/fail to fires/hangfires.0 -
Why are they both called 209 primers? Pistol primers are fine; small, large, magum, rifle, and etc. 0 -
209 refers to the physical size-just as you pointed out small pistol, small rifle, large blah blah blah. Shotgun primers used to come in sizes also-209 and #57. There was/is also a hotter 209M in the CCI line meant to ignite heavy charges of slow powder in magnum shotgun loads.
To reiterate, the muzzleloader specific primers have lower flash than standard 209 primers. The reason is that after some use, it was found that the standard 209 when used in muzzleloaders was sometimes too much of a good thing. In some cases flash holes were too small to handle the output of the 209 causing things like I pointed out-blowback of the striker/hammer. I don't follow the ML fads much so don't know all the skinny on this problem-I just know what happens with the one I shoot.0 -

I reloaded 20 shotgun shells with muzzle load primers for my 835 and they all went bang. I had the same question but nobody had a answer so I just did it.0 -
IMHO:
If it reads FOR MUZZLELOADERS ONLY that would make it self explanatory.
In reloading if something says ONLY, Do NOT, etc, I would not question the manuafacturer saying such and go by the rules.
Also in reading about the Winchester 209 primers, it appears they were designed for a lower ignition flash so as to reduce the CRUD ring left at the powder breech area (the area where the powder is ignited by the primer flash) when using triple 7 powder and 209 shotgun primers. After reading that this was one of the reasons for their design I noticed this crud ring can be felt with a patch after a few shots when using triple 7 and the 209 shotgun primers and the crud ring seems to just keep growing with each shot if the bore is not cleaned quite often and the crud ring is less apparent with a cleaning patch when using the Winchester 209 triple 7 primers for the same amount of shots.
I think I read also another reason for the 209 muzzleloader primer design was to let the powder charge start the bullet down the bore instead of the hotter ignition flash of the shotgun 209 primer starting the bullet and then the powder charge igniting after the projecticle was launched by the primer and therefore the velocity and pressures were more erratic when using the shotgun 209's in some muzzleloaders!
I do know that I get more consistent accuracy from my muzzleeloaders when using the winchester 209's instead of the shotgun primers.0
