30-06 and Lead
Does anyone use lead bullets in 30-06?
if so what would your favorite load be?
i am considering a 165g FP (BHN 22).

Many people use lead bullets in 30/06. Look in a LYMAN reloading manual they have great loading data. Also web site Cast BULITTS 0 -
Lyman has a load book dedicated just for cast bullets and for just about ever Cal. is listed as there regular load book. Its a great read to boot. 0 -
the only powders listed that i was familiar with in the 160-170 range are Unique and 2400.
Another source (internet) uses Trailboss. I haven't tried it yet, if i can even find any.
Just wondering if anyone had any personal preferences.0 -
2400, 16-20 gr depending on what your gun likes, or SR 4759, 18-24 gr are my favorites. At the other end of the spectrum, a case full to the base of the neck with surplus .50 cal powder and a mag primer runs about 2100 fps, not too far off the mark with good lube, bullet fit, and gas check. Or drop to 50 gr for about 1900 fps, though with more unburnt powder. 0 -
I load lead rounds for my kids to shoot in the 30/06. Shoots easy for the younger ones.
I load the Speer Plinker 30 cal 110 grain bullet behind 10-12 gr of Unique and sometimes Trailboss (unsure of how many grains) as I'm sitting at work.

Lyman has great info on cast loads for many calibers. Don't use lead in a semi-auto as it can foul the gas system. I prefer to use gas checks to cut down the cleaning, but a good hard alloy is pretty clean as well. 0 -
I use a lot of 4198 and Unique with the Lyman 170 grain cast bullet driven up to 2000 FPS. It is very accurate out of my 2 groove springfield barrel 0 -

That's a common misconception that thousands of rounds of cast out of my M1 Garand and M1 Carbine would beg to differ with, as well as a fair number out of my Hakim, Mas 49/56, and SKS. I would NOT recommend that a beginner go down this route, but it surely can be done with good bullet fit, proper lube, and a good alloy with gas check and proper powders and charges.0
