    ah ha...he dropped it off to me without the mag. So maybe that is why I cannot get it to function correctly. I have never owned a S&W semi either. Thank you!

    Not all S&W's have a magazine safety, but some do. I am fairly sure that the 457 is one that does.

    Smith 457 most definitely DOES have the internal magazine safety.

    So, no magazine in gun, no firing of gun.

    That's the issue.

    Obviously, this helps prevent negligent discharge by the (many) idiots who think that if you eject a magazine the gun is "unloaded".

    Also, its been proposed that if someone is trying to grab the gun from you, you can hit the mag release button then inactivate the gun.

    Not sure this is a worthwhile tradeoff, since if you accidentally hit the mag release yourself, or the magazine becomes lost or damaged, you can't even get off one shot in an emergency.
