Model 12 trench or riot?
I have a Winchester model 12 shotgun. It has the U.S. flaming bomb stamp on the receiver and barrel. The serial no. indicates it was built in 1946. It doesn't have the shield on the barrel or a bayonet lug. Did all trench guns have the shield? Or is this a riot gun?

Great caution has to be exercised. The spurious stamping of US military markings, has turned into a profitable cottage industry for certain folks.
The 12's have to have to be military marked on receivers, barrel & stock.
Serial number range for the blued ones 926,000 to 1,030,000. For the parked ones 1,030,000 to 1,040,000.
Best to have a pro check it out if it was made in 46. That's after the war, and might have been assembled from left over parts?0 -
Serial number is in the bluing range, and it is blued. Unfortunately the stock and forearm have been changed. It belonged to my father inlaw. He got it right after the war. He did some gunsmith work back then and made new wood for it. 0 -
With the serial number, I can determine exactly whne it was made. The currently published serial number lists are not accurate.
Heat shields were used only on the Trench Guns.0 -

The serial number is 1003125. So how do I get the correct list of DOM from serial numbers? I have several Winchesters I'd like to look up.0 -
Many of the "trenchguns" were brought back and modified...If it has the original barrel, it will have three groves near the muzzle(used to attach the hanguard / bayonet lug) and no front sight bead (trench barrels had no bead..the bead was on the bayonet lug)....If it has no grooves it is either a "riot" barrelor a civilian barrel changed out post war.... both the riot and the trench barrels were 20-1/2 "in length..

The barrel is 20-1/2 and has the U.S. flaming bomb. It only has one grove though. But it has what looks like an after market flash suppresor made by Lyman on it. That's where the bead is. All serial numbers match also.0 -

Interesting to know it's a 1943. All these years I thought it was a 46. Yes. It is a "42" marked barrel. So I'm thinking that this might have been a trench with the shield removed. Or do you think it is a riot gun because it only has the one grove on the barrel?0 -
Sportsman, here is my military model 12 riot. As you can see it has been totally bubbaed. Somebody added a Weaver choke, beavertail forearm, grip cap, checkered the original stock and added a white spacer and recoil pad. It does have all the flaming bombs and US marks on both the receiver and barrel. It doesn't have any cuts in the barrel for a heat shield, so I am sure it started out as a riot. If you look close you can see the original WB cartouche on the nicely checkered stock.[B)]

Factory original Trench Gun barrels will have three grooves (one for each of the three screws that attached the heat shield to the barrel). A Riot Gun should not have any grooves on the bottom of the barrel beyond the magazine tube. 0
