SAA Gen 1,2,3?

Shopping for grips and I see ads for grips that fit 1st and 2nd Gen, then I'll see one that says fits 2nd and 3rd. What are the differences between the 1st and 2nd Gen, not only for grips, but all parts?
What fits what?

  Normally Gen 1 grips are the smallest and also more varied in size They were fitted to the grip frame and BIG difference between the largest and the smallest. 2nd gen also were slightly bigger and most will sort of fit any other 2nd Gen 3TH is the largest and most uniform in size Now on top of that the Design of Checkering and COLT HORSE as well as Eagle have MANY MANY changes. Other changes on single action are so many that lots of BOOKS deal on what marks SHOULD be on what serial number guns , I have been studying them for 40 years and know about 10% of how to tell if all parts are original or Even the right time frame.

  Thanks Karl, that narrows down the confusion a bit.
  I picked up an early Great Western in .45 Colt. It has the optional Colt hammer, and sometime during it's well used life, someone fitted a 1st Gen black powder cyl to it. They also poorly fitted a pair of ebony? grips to it.
  The ebony grips are a bit oversize still, and I would give them a proper fit, but the gold medallions are an eyesore to me. The plan is a set of faux aged ivory grips, and a Belgian blue.
  Just before you posted, I found how they need to be measured, to order on the Tombstone Gun Grips site. Hopefully I can get this old hogleg back to shooting condition.
