New York compliant Springfield Armory M1a?
I'm considering buying a SA m1a. I believe that a California compliant,no bayonet lug,m1a would only need to have the muzzle compensator removed to be NY compliant? Am I correct and if so how involved/expensive is that?

Well,I did some research and it appears the muzzle brake screws off by loosening the set screw and removing the brake with a castle nut wrench. It appears that approximately 1" of the barrel is threaded to accomodate the brake. So my question has changed somewhat. As I understand the new New York law,not just the muzzle brake must come off but the threading on the barrel must be permanantly removed to avoid being catagorized as an 'assault weapon'. So if I have a smith remove the threads will that make the m1a NY legal? Has anyone done this? 0 -

CA has no laws restricting bayonet lugs on any firearm so don't go by that when working with NY laws. 0 -
No matter what you think is legal, you will have to take delivery from your NYS dealer. So, you may as well talk to your dealer; he will know what he can sell you. You have no negotiating ability, just take your beating.

You make a very good point. The advantages of owning an m-14/m1a over an m-1 Garand are canceled out by New York's new law and the tight ammo supply. As I see it:
1. Cheap and readily available 7.62 ammo is no longer cheap or readily available.
2. The advantage of a high capacity detachable magazine no longer exists.
3. A good Garand costs about half the price of an m1a.0
