Looking at buying or building an 870 home defense gun and want to know is there an advantage to having a top folding stock. Will be kept behind the headboard, bedside dresser drawer, etc.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

The action spring of the 1100 extends into the stock. Because of this, doubtful a folding stock is feasible?

not going to happen with the 1100, or any other shotgun with the recoil spring in the stock. you are stuck with a pistol gripped stock. it is your only choice.

I had one of the original top folders made by Remington, years ago on a 870.

It look really neat and made a nice compact concealable package with the riot barrel and extended mag.

The only fly in the soup is when shooting it. Even with a tight cheek weld the steel strut was very uncomfortable when recoiling, specially with 00's.

Yup, R-S has it right: the recoil with the 870 folders was miserable.
