The gas ring was moved from the yoke to the cylinder itself. 0 -
19-3 is also my favorite centerfire revolver.
The "dash" numbers just refer to minor engineering changes that Smith made to the different guns along the way. With the exception of changing the extractor rod thread direction, the rest of these were basically all to simplify manufacturing and decrease cost.
I think its debatable how much these changes really affected the intrinsic quality of the guns, but whether they did all else being equal, the lower the "dash" number, the more collectible/desirable the gun.
Here's a quick summary of the "dash" mods on the older K frame revolvers:
-1 1959 Change to LH extractor rod thread
-2 1961 Cylinder stop changed, hole in front of trigger guard eliminated
-3 1967 Relocation of rear sight leaf screw
-4 1977 Changed gas ring from yoke to cylinder
-5 1982 Eliminate cylinder counterbore
