Taking a G-3 Stock apart?
Anyone know? I have a Surplus G-3 stock I want to take apart. I want to remove the metal part that hold the recoil spring off the wood butt stock. I can see what holds it on deep in the stock. Looks like a screw driver would do the trick if I had one long enough.
Is there a special tool or will a long screw driver do the trick??

I know that for the FAL there is a special tool, but there is also a trick to doing it with a couple of cleaning rod pieces and a screwdriver.

You need o remove the butt plate and you are lucky because on the wood stocks the plate is simply screwed on while the later plastic stocks ahve plates secured by snap-clips and they are a complete PITA to remove. The stock is hollow so if you take a small flash light and look deep into it's interior you wills see the buffer screw which secure the buffer onto the back plate assembly. The rear sling attachment assembly is in the way and so far as I know it is not possible to remove it so you will need a long thin screw driver to reach down and remove the buffer retaining screw. Once that is free you can then go into the front of the back plate assembly and remove the two retaining screws and the assembly "should" be free from the stock. Keep in mind that wood stocks have not been in use for half a century and the assembly may well be fixed solidly onto the wood and not eager to come loose. A leather mallet can be a big help here in persuading it to come off. Reassembly is straight forward but I can tell you that trying to get deep inside the stock to screw the buffer screw back into place is an exercise in frustration because you are working totally blind and with nothing but luck to guide that screw back into place. Oh dear! I may not be so lucky as the reason I want to remove it is to swap it with the nicer metal part on the factory plastic stock
What's it cost to have a smith re finish the original metal on my wood stock? That might be the way to go.0 -
While it is not especially easy to remove the back plate assembly, it is not impossible either, you just need to be prepared to spend a little time in order to get it accomplished. There are no special tools needed (unlike the FN FAL), you just have to work around some tough spots to get it done. 0 -
Well I will give it a try. I don't know where I will get a screw driver long enough if home depot don't have one. Wal Mart does not have them long enough. 0
