Lever action calibers?

How common are they in 308 or 30-06?

Not very. The design of the lever action typically requires two things - a rimmed case, and a flat point bullet design.

Using a box magazine fixes the rimmed case issue, and the flat point bullet design issue. A slightly spiraled tube mag also takes care of the flat point issue, but not the rimmed case issue.

Off the top of my head, the only lever guns in those calibers are the Browning BLR and the Savage 99

I've heard of local gunsmith rechambering .35 Remington Marlins to .358 Winchester.

    Actually,

    More common than some believe.

Winchester made the Model 1895 lever-action in 30-06 (and 30-03), and they made Model 88 lever-action in .308 Win (as well as 243, 284 and 358 Win cartridges).

Browning made the BLR (Browning Lever Action) in both the 308 and 30-06.

My opinion, when you scope a lever and chamber it in a long cartridge you take away the very esscence of the design. It performs best as a light, thin, balanced , quick firing , large capacity rifle. It does this best in short to medium rim fire cartridges. Historically it was the calibers offered in lever rifles that allowed the bolt action to gain popularity.

USRC built a 'trapper' version of the model 94 in .45 Colt. It is a hoot. Ask and ye shall, not mine though.
