Back on my 1903 and a Scope.

As I have been saying on the forum since Saturday I bought a sportorized 1903 Springfield. Previously it had a scope on in as is has the bases drilled and taped to it. I was all excited and went out and bought a medium priced scope, a Bushnell Dusk and Dawn, 4X12X40mm. The salesman looked at the gun and said I needed 1" Grand Slam HIGH Windage Adjustable Rings (Weaver), I came home and mounted the scope on the gun but discovered the safety and bolt on the rifle does not clear the outside diameter of the rear of the scope, so I could not bring the bolt up nor put the safety on the gun. I have never had a center fire rifle or scope before. Can I buy higher mounts or should I get a scope with a smaller OD on the rear of the scope? What would you recommend? If I took it to a gunsmith could they put it together? Someone had a scope on her before.

  Ah, now you understand why the 1903A4 sniper rifle had a curved bolt handle! Time was, folks would just have a gunsmith bend the 03 handle, but today it might be cheaper to buy a repro bolt body. Even with the curved handle, the 1903A4 scope prevented full travel of the safety, but that was found unnecessary because the safety requires only a partial rotation.
  
  I'm not familiar with the dimensions of your scope or your mount, but higher rings may not solve your problem without excessive height. A visit to a gunsmith might save money in the long run.

  A bunch of companies make what are called "see thru" scope rings, as shown in this photo off the net.
  
  
  
  Although in most cases they will enable you to operate the bolt and safety, the added high makes a good cheek weld on the stock very problematic.
  
  Might e best to take Neals advice. Or get one of these guys who advertize on the net to bend your bolt, for scope clearance.
