Winchester Custom Shop Shotgun Markings
I know Winchester Pigeon Grade shotguns generally have a "Pigeon" or the words "Pigeon Grade" stamped somewhere on them. I have a Winchester Model 50 Featherweight that has "Pigeon" stamped under the serial number. However, I assume many fancy, special order, non-Pigeon Grade shotguns came out of Winchester's Custom Shop. I've seen quite a few guns lately that appear to have Pigeon Grade quality or upgraded factory stocks and workmanship, but that aren't stamped Pigeon Grade. I therefore deduce these guns are one of two things: 1) special order guns from Winchester's Custom Shop or 2) pieced together firearms using upgraded stocks and parts from factory donor guns or from Winchester's aftermarket parts bins. For example, I know Winchester for years sold deluxe wood for Model 12 shotguns. I also realize guns from the Custom Shop came with letters of authenticity to the purchaser, but many have been lost over the years. So, here are my questions. Are there any special markings on a shotgun from Winchester's Custom Shop that would identify it as a true factory Custom Shop gun? I know some of the last Model 70s from the Custom Shop had special proof marks, but I don't know if that was Winchester's practice in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Without a letter from the Custom Shop, is it possible to identify a Winchester Custom Shop gun from one that was slapped together in someone's shop? Thanks.
