You could call it that, but Winchester did not.

Winchester did list and manufacture a Model 1897 Brush Gun, with a 26-inch CYL bore barrel.

OK, Bert, I got to ask: A friend has a 97 with a 26" cyl.-marked barrel. Is that officially a "brush gun" or are other markings required?

That makes it a Brush Gun. They were not marked in any fashion, it was just the physical configuration of the gun.

Thanks, Bert. He doesn't think very highly of it. I think I'll try to get it away from him. I'm a sucker for 97's.

When you do get it away from him, please send me the serial number for my research survey.

Even if I don't get the gun away from him, I'll get you that number.

    Smitty: That's a great story!

Me too. Winchester 97's and the Model 12's are my favorite shotguns. I inherited my Great Grandfather's 97 and his model 12 which got me even more interested in them and over the years I bought several more when I found a good buy on one. I've got 8 model 12's now and a couple of model 97's. Great guns!

When I was a kid my Dad owned a service station and the AC oil/air filter company had a catalog that you could get prizes from if you saved up enough of their filter box tops. They had the Winchester Model 12 as one of the prizes that I really wanted. I saved every oil filter and air filter box top I could find at my Dad's station for over 3 years and finally I had enough to get one of the 12 ga. Model 12's. When I tried to order it the year was 1966 and Winchester had discontinued the Model 12 and I had to settle for a Model 1200.[:(] Broke my heart! I wanted one just like my Great Grandpa's so bad. I hunted with that 1200 for many years and though it's not the quality of the Model 12 it was still a good gun until some thief stole it.[:(!] I still have a Model 1200 today but it'a riot gun that sits by my bed. This model 1200 has been shot very few times in it's life but it's probably ridden a million miles in a police car. I bought it from Gulf States in Montgomery, AL a gun shop that takes old police gun trade-ins.
