Mossberg 500 Bantam 20 gauge
Thinking up picking this for my 11-year old. He just completed hunter safety and has been using a single-shot .410 for the last few years. Time to upgrade to a 20 and in due time a Browning A5 12 gauge. I can purchase one new for $257. I know they are not topline but just want your thoughts from those who have used them.

I think enough of them to buy one for DIL to use as a home defense gun. They are rough and stiff when new but an evening of racking the lubed action will take quite a bit of that out. No need to slam it open and shut-just work it. 0 -
For about the same amount of money or slightly more, and some patience, you could get him a used Remington 870 20ga youth express shotgun with a 21 inch remchoke barrel. A very versatile gun and a very good investment, imo. It will also hold its value, if taken care of, of course. It would also be around for him to pass onto his sons... etc. I just personally think the 870 action is just so much better than the mossberg you mentioned. 0 -
you cant beat a mossberg! own many of them. not a problem. the advantage the mossbergs have over the remingtons is the safety mounted at the back of the gun. super easy for anyone to reach and use. 0 -

I second this I have the same gun I have had it since I was a young boy, I would suggest a Wingmaster version if you can afford it.0 -

I think they are both great guns for the money, but I HATE the dang guard that Remington puts where you load the shells in the tube. I have seen WAY too many get bent up over time. Other then that it pretty much comes down to where you would rather have the safety.
Them Bantam's are great shotguns. My old man bought a Mossberg 500 20 gauge in 1986. It was 2 months after I was born. He took it out, shot 5 rounds through it, cleaned it, put it back in the box and gave it to me for my 10th birthday. Dang thing had a 28" barrel and was taller then me at the time, but man what a gift it turned out to be! I still have it and I can't even guess how many rounds have went down that tube. Great gun! Bought a pair of Bantam 20 ga. for youth trap shoots at our club. Both have been shot thousands of times without a problem. $257 is a good price. We paid $279 ea. for ours 0 -
I am leary of pump guns for kids but if they are already shooting 410. 20 ga shouldn't be a big deal.
Like others have mentioned they run well for a long time. Not without flaws but nothing really is.0 -
When the kids are shooting we only put one in the tube so they can get the feel of chambering a round. ALWAYS SAFETY FIRST 0 -
