S&W 629 early models
If the info I have is correct the 629 came out in 1978.
This was about 4 years prior to the end of pinned and recessed SW revolvers.
Were the early 629s pinned & recessed?

Just saw a pinned-recessed no dash 629 on the auction side.
The 629-1s I viewed lack theses features.
The no dash seller claims the 629 was only pinned & recessed for about 11 months.
Can someone tell me if this was the case?
If so Im curious as to why they stopped in 79 on the 629s while continuing the practice on 29s and some other models until 82-83.
Maybe the info I have is wrong and the 629 came out later than 78?

I have a 629-2 that isn't and a 29-2 that is 0 -
I have a 4" 629-1, that I purchased new in 1982, at the age of 16. My late father had to get it permitted to his NYS permit. It was my first handgun. It does not have the pinned barrel or recessed cylinder.
From my understanding, the 629 was announced in 1978, but was not on dealer's shelves, until late 1980, or slightly before. One must understand, that the Model 29 was introduced in the 1955 era, so it had some running time before S&W made the stainless version. That is why some 29's were pinned and recessed into the "-2" engineering change.

I believe most if not all of the models that had it...dropped it around 82-83.
This was also the -2 to -3 model change in most cases from what I understand.
I have a model 27 with 27-2 on the frame & recessed cyl.and a fixed barrel.
The ser# dates it 83.This validates it to be a transitional gun.
Smith was simply using up leftover -2 frames.

The only two scenerios that makes sense to me is:
1-the seller is wrong and the no dash model ran longer than 11 mos.with all having been P&R.
2-the model was not manufactured until late 80 or early 81.
It just doesnt make sense to P&R from 78-79.
Maybe they stopped early because it was stainless and tougher to do?
I dont remember when the model 65 began or if they were ever P&R.

Ikannes...thank you.It can be seen on the frame of the one you found that it is a no dash.
I believe all no dash 629s are P&R.
When the features were disc.it stands to reason they became a 629-1.
The question Iam hoping to get answered is...how long was the 629 in production before the -1 began?
As a collector Id have more interest in a 629 no dash if the P&R guns were limited to only 11 months rather than what I suspect may have been a 3-4 year run.
Either way Id like to get a clean one in a 8 3/8in.
The one 44mag I now have is a 29 no dash 4-screw 4in.(1958).
It was my fathers and LNIB so I wont fire it.
Id like to have a 44mag I will shoot that is also somewhat collectible.

With the -1 models the pinned & recessed features were dropped.
My question is...are all no dash 629s P&R.
The bluebook says there were 100 prototypes that were P&R.
There is a ser# range for the protos but I dont think P&R is unique to the protos.
I believe vrichard answered this when dating his beautiful trio of 629s.
It seems all 629 no dash guns were P&R.
Id like to get opinions as to what a fair price on a 99% no box 8.375in 629 no dash would be.

The 6in.mdl.629 P.R.late 1979--early 1980.
The 4in.P.R.& 8 3/8 in.mdl 629 P.R.--1981.
