220 Swift
Anyone have any experience using 35 grain bullets in a 220 Swift?
Ran into a good deal on some 35 grain bullets and wondering how they'd work in the Swift.

What would cause a bullet to go sideways thru a target? I have a Ruger 220 Swift in a 26" heavy barrel. The load was 50 grn. Sierra Spitzer Blitz with 37 grns of IMR 4895. I'm loading the bullet .010 from touching the lands. I have shot this same load many times without that happening and all of a sudden I get one that actually keyholed. One thing I noticed was my velocity's were in the mid 3700's however the one that keyholed was 200 fps faster. 0 -
Depends on how they are made. If they are for low velocity 22 cartridges, they won't make it much past the muzzle of a Swift. Unless you load them down, and then they're not very Swift.[:D] 0 -
Made for high velocity.

+1 Cheechako 40 gr in 225 Winchester, nice gray puff of smoke about 6 feet from the muzzle.
If they are good deal I'd get them, Maybe you will get lucky and they will be solid copper ones, or just download until they stay together.
Ask Hornady but just swaged lead core means they will not take top end loads.

Iffy...I've had the V-max's come apart in my .257 Wby. with top loads. That was only 3900. A Swift can drive a 35 gr. bullet over 4200.
However, if those particular V-max's are made for 22-250's they should be able to handle top, or at least near top velocities.
In my mind that bullet was made so the .223 competed with the .17 for just flat out shooting flat and not much else.0 -
Such light bullet defeat the general purpose of the big cased 22's-driving a decent weight bullet at extremely high velocity. With light bullets you get the velocity w/o the mass to retain it. I don't even mess with anything under 50 grains even in a 223. 0 -
Well............
That didn't work out. Can easily drive them at 4400 fps with no signs of excessive pressure but observe a gray puff about 50' out. No hit in the paper. Appears they are breaking up in flight.
Lets see what we can do with 45 gr Noslers.0
