belted ammo

good morning,

i came across some belted 30-06. it is stamped 88 at 12 oclock and 30-06 at 6 oclock. is it ok to shoot in a garand?

    You mean in a belt [?][?]
    If so it should be OK as it was not loaded hotter for a machine gun [;)]

    (19)88 and 30-06 seems odd for GI ammo. What bullet are they loaded with? Anyone could put them in the links, I'd want to know more about them before I'd risk my Garand.

    You might try GOOGLEing, "Cartridge Headstamps", or something similar. There use to be a number of sites on the net, with headstamp data. See if you can find one that lists the markings on your ammo.

    EDIT #1, That's real strange about Western using a two digit number on their headstamp? Mostly you see headdstamps with two digit numbers on ammo from the East Bloc, China etc. The number is then identifier of the particular factory that made the ammo.

    88 is the code for Western Cartridge Company (Olin), East Alton, IL.

    Question remains, did Western load for MG? I've no idear. I'd pull a bullet and see if weights in @ 150-gr. then should be good to go.

    If weight is 172-gr, (I think that is 30-06 MG load?), I'd un-assemble and reload to Garand spec's with 150-gr. bullet & proper powder.

    EDIT Are primers laquered sealed & crimped?

    EDIT-2 Nah, not a waste of time to find out exactly what-is what, which is being asked by mallard... de-link a round, kinetic-pull the bullet, weigh it... presto!, in a "wasted'' minutes time.
    If it is MG ammo, to sell it, well, he should know what it is being sold. Too, there goes good primed virgin brass where a cold winters night or two to delink & de-bullet is all it takes to ready it for the Garand to reload. But, each to their own.

    Ha, what a can of worms, but with availabilty/cost of ammo as is right now, I still maintain is worth the effort to pull a bullet, weigh, oh and also check see if Boxer primed, if wish to reload. Simple.

    Is it Belted or Linked?

    If you can not find any info on it, I would not waist the time pulling it apart and trying to figure out how it is loaded.

    I would list it as Belted or Linked ammo and find someone that can use it as is and take the $ and buy some ammo to shoot in your Garand.

    Personally speaking, unless I knew exactly what it was, I would not risk it in an M1. Unless verified M2 ball in a sealed container, it could be anything from MG ammo, to someone's reloads put in a belt. Pulling the bullet and verifying what bullet weight is is only half the story; even if the powder LOOKS like a known M2 ball powder and weighs the same, again, unless you know for sure what it was loaded with, it could be someone's reload- even if it has primer sealant, as such is available commercially as well.

    I'd only risk in the M1 after trying it in a bolt gun and even then, with an adjustable gas plug.
