Are we talking semi or revolver? Taurus makes a revolver and S&W made a revolver for a very brief time also. The manufacturers have not worked out the design problems to make a 17HMR function reliably and safely in a semi auto design.

Therre have been all kinds of handguns made for 17HMR. Taurus, Ruger, and S&W all made revolvers for it. Savage made a bolt action for it. TC made a single shot for it, and Magnum Research made a 10/22 based handgun, and rifles for it.

The Savage bolt action Stryker, was magazine fed, with a left handed bolt, for right handed shooter's. It was extremely accurate.

The deal with the semi-auto's in both handgun, and rifles was, even though the bolt was weight enhanced for the extra pressure, the gun ad to be kept clean, or it stood the possibility of building pressures high enough to prematurely open the bolt, before the presures subsided, and rupture the casing.

Hope this sheds some light on the subject.

I just picked up a S&W 647 last night. Not a 17HMR fan but the little guy in my head said that if S&W made a gun that was only produced for 2 years and you have never seen one in person, BUY IT!!!
Will see whether or not it was a good thing. Does look and feel great though!
