Is it safe to practice with air guns for self defense? My buddy says that this can get you killed in a real case of self defense. I don't see how, as i do shoot my other guns a few times a week. What do you guys think? I only practice w/my airgun inside and outside only if the neighbors dog eats my dog's food.

The most powerful are those larger caliber ones designed for hunting. I don't know what level of accuracy they attain nor what their price is. 0 -
Benjamin/Crosman

I personally have an RWS model 48, in 177 caliber. Scope and all, I have well over $600.00 into it. I have killed everything from chipmunk's to redfox, and turkey's with it.
Those Nitro piston break open guns that Benjamin, and Crosman have, are great for the money, and provide great power. However, if you are looking at absolute power, combined with very good, but not outstanding bench rest accuracy, the pre-charged-pnuematics are where it is at. That is why I suggested the Benjamin line, and specifically the Marauder, in either 22 caliber, or 25 caliber. I have recently had the privilage to see both in action, and in the right hands, at 50 yards or under, will do up a 150 pound turkey that is all dark meat, with a white tail fan. These are no joke, and are not like your average Red Ryder, for sure.
With the PCP guns, you don't have to worry about your scope as much as you do with a spring, or gas piston gun. Just about any decent rifle scope will do.

Define "Accurate and powerful".
By your criteria, you probably want breakbarrel/single shot and .22 caliber.
RWS/Diana model 48 costs about $425 new, puts out a .22 caliber pellet at 900 feet per second [edit], and has great build quality. That's the one I'd get if I were you.0 -
I would say the most powerful air rifles will deliver 1200 fps, but your
trade off is a very strong spring to overcome when loading. Your arms
will tired quickly and precharged rifles sell for 600+
Some of the sites that sell air guns also have "reviews" and will give
you an idea of the pros and cons. Find the one in your price range
and do some research as the big difference has to do with trigger
quality. Years ago I had a Beeman/Feinwerkbau 240 deluxe with an
excellent trigger.....German quality and could hit anything at 50 yds.
Nowadays Beeman/Hammerelli are made in China along with others and
the quality has gone downhill to make them cheaper.

Great guns, but once you get into the high velocity .22 model, you're going to bust the $425 budget by a considerable margin. . .these are closer to $600.
There are others that can do it cheaper, but I think RWS/Diana is going to give you the best combo of high quality and performance in that price range.
EDIT: RWS/DIANA are also German made, by the way.0 -
I know folks who bought $50 Crossman and put in $425+ in after market goodies to kill coons in "silence". If you're going for accuracey go with a .22 for a little more distance and punch. 0 -

CCI CB Long in any good rifle, lees noise than my Benjamin or china trainer. I rebuild a 100 or so crossmans, dozens of sheridans and benjamins. 0
