Cartriage ID Help Please
First, I know everyone wants pictures but at the moment I don't have a camera available that I can get readable photos of the case head with.
Bought some 'mixed' ammo Saturday night thinking it was 303 surplus, at least most of it was just that. Is marked with 'POF', '65', and a '7'. If the 7 is held at 6 o'clock the POF would be at 10 and the 65 at 2 o'clock.
What was mixed in was also a rimmed cartriage same length as the 303 but the rim is a slightly larger diameter (.554), case is approx same(2.19), similar overall length (3.05). There the similarity ends, the bullet diameter is .328 and case is fatter (.490 next to rim) and does not taper as much but the shoulder is about 1/2" long taper. It is a Berdan case with a spherical shaped primer that is smaller than the 303 primer and is slightly recessed into the case head. Case head has 4 scribed marks as if a large 'X' was drawn on it. At the top is 'VIII', on the left is '19', and on the right is '38', at the bottom is something resembling an eagle with spread rings looking to the left seting on a circle with something in the circle that is too small to id, sort of looks like a tiny star, emphasis on tiny. Dimensions match nothing in my reloading manuals. I have 3 loaded rounds and 14 casings.
When the daughter gets home I'll see if her camera will take a decent photo.

During W W II the Hungarians were allies of the krauts. During the early years of the Russian campaign they used their own rifles and machine guns, that were chambered for the 8 X 56R cartridge. The Austrians that had been absorbed into the German Army used the standard 8mm Mauser.
Here is a photo of the ammo on mannlicher clips that were used on both the older Austrian rifles and the newer Model 1935's that the Hungarians used.

That would be them. Do the fired cases have any value or do I just toss them in the scrap brass box? 0 -

The POF stands for Pakistan Ordnance Factory, made in 1965 at Rawalpindi. The "7" indicates the cartridge is a Mark 7 .303-inch cartridge. These cartridges probably have copper primers and they are corrosive.
The symbol on the 8x56R Austrian is an eagle holding a swastika inside of a circle. These were manufacturer by Hirtenberger Patronfabrik. This headstamp was used from 1938 to 1945 by the military.
I don't consider the fired cases as having any value.

The .303s use a large berdan primer, nearly impossible to find. The 8X56R uses a standard Berdan primer, in and of itself a pain, but theoretically reloadable if you're set up for it. But for one I wouldn't bother; the brass is scrap. 0 -

Of the 8x56R I have 14 cases. Of 303 Brit I'm not sure, didn't get any in this buy but know there are some in the scrap box, used to have a bunch saved from over 20 years of shooting mil surplus just in case I had to use it but disposed of it a few years back when I finally got a good supply of commercial brass.
