full auto bolt/carrier colt
is it okay to have a full auto bolt & carrier in your colt AR 15 from around the 70's ( SP1 )model[?].
No other full auto parts either[^] JUST BOLT / CARRIER.
just asking for a friend that bought an AR this weekend.
if not out it comes and replaced with current one.

Since it's not part of the fire control it's perfectly legal. 0 -
Some current ones come with them. I bought a Bushmaster about 15yrs ago and it has a M-16 carrier in it. 0 -
transfered a couple new colts here that had M16 carriers...i would have to look but fed regs used to state not one part of a M16 can be in a AR15?? 0 -
The fellas with the bulges in the cheap suits recommend that the following parts NOT be installed in an AR-15: M16 hammer, trigger, disconnector, selector. (M16 bolt carrier is also named, but was later removed from the list.)
If you have any of the above installed, AND your rifle can be made (by any means) to fire > 1 round with a single pull of the trigger, then you have screwed the pooch. ("by any means" can include driving a screwdriver into the FCG with a hammer, as well as welding on a piece of metal.)

EDIT: Things are not always that simple. Ever since the Clinton/Gore regime, the gun-ban folks in Congress have put restrictions on ATF projects in the annual appropriations bill. Often the projects restricted were those that clarified regulations. Look at ATF P5300.4, which has yet to be updated to remove the so-called assault weapons expiration in 2004.0 -
Full auto bolt carrier in semi auto AR15=Good to go. Even new production Colt 6920's are being shipped with auto carriers.
As stated above, using any other FCG parts that are full auto is a no-no, unless properly modified to semi auto specs.0 -
Due to it's original design weight giving a higher degree of reliability Colt lobbied the BATFE for a common sense approach to use of these style carriers with a semiauto only fire control group. They eventually relented and modified their regs several years ago.
A clear example is that semiauto Colt Defense rifles - as well as several others - now leave the factory equipped with these M16 style carriers.
No federal restrictions exist on refitting an older one with this type.0 -

and yet this remains one of the most hotly contested topics in firearms lore. i just dont get it. we have access to information from the far reaches of the globe instantly. when something deemed important by the masses happens, everybody with a smartphone or facebook page knows about it in 2 minutes; but this issue is still being debated years later.
i understand not everyone is that internet savy, but dont you think that by now this little tid bit would have circulated the gun show and shooting range circuit enough times that all but the minority would have heard it?
