Winchester 1890 markings
Regarding my solid frame Model 1890 serial number 690. When I removed the stock, I noticed "343" stamped on the side of the lower tang. And also stamped into the top of the stock right where the upper tang covers. These markings remind me of what a deluxe rifle has. A deluxe can have the special order number stamped in the same area. This rifle has no special grade wood or any other features. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Pictures to follow.

The "First Model", solid frame, 24" barrel, case hardened frame, with fixed rear sight had the serial number on the lower tang only.
Built 1890 to 1892. Maybe Bert can explain this.0 -
It's my guess that it's an assembly number that matches the stock to the rifle for some reason, be it a special order change that deviates from typical dimensions or, perhaps, achieving a drop that might have required bending the tangs. 0 -
The "347" stamped on the left side of the lower tang and in the upper channel of the butt stock is an assembly number. Typically, assembly numbers are only found on the deluxe rifles, but due to the very early manufacture date of your Model 1890, almost anything is possible. 0 -
Assuming it is a factory applied marking, it matches the gun and wood together and it is adds to the value and originality at least one little bit. 0
