Shortening A Shotgun Barrel II
Just saw the previous thread. I have shortened many 1100 barrels in the 18 1/2 to 21" length. Make sure you are minimum 18" I always go to min 18 1/2 or 19". You may have some function problems depending on the ammo you use although I have only had it happen once. Some low brass will not generate enough pressure to cycle the action. Always test fire to make sure it cycles. You may have to open the apature slightly to allow more gas for reliable functioning. Cut to 20" you should have no problem and I beleive that will allow for a 2 round mag extension.

I still think that 24" 12ga. 3" is the Best all-a-round length on a Hunting Shot Gun.
The right Length is going to be judged by intended use.0 -
I like 20" with screw in chokes. My two favorite shotguns are both chambered for 3" but I don't load that round. I do run 2 3/4 loaded at 3 3/4 DE with 1 1/4 oz of shot. A mid bead in the rib of the 870 Express allows for good work with the 540 gr cast Lyman sabot slug. Keeping the extended magazine full helps soak up the recoil in the pistol gripped unit.
I have found that true cylinder bore is not all that useful especially if you need to catch dinner. The lack of a proper front bead doesn't help much either.0 -

The 1100 I'm intending to convert to a tactical gun was my dads old bird and deer gun. He hunted ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, turkey, and deer with this gun and even did a lot of clay pidgeon shooting with it. He did his own reloading and I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't had 5000 rounds through it.
The walnut stock still looks pretty fair and over 95% of the bluing is still good. It's a 12 gauge with vent rib and the bore still look like new. He did take very good care of the gun and I recently replaced the recoil spring and firing pin and the gun still functions flawlessly.
However, I'm now 61 years old...have no interest in hunting of any kind and have no young people in our family or extended family that is even remotely interested in hunting. If they were I would gladly pass it on down to them.
In view of this with the family, and in light of what is going on in our country right now, I feel the gun would better serve as a converted tactical weapon for home defense. And since I've already got the gun it would not cost much for me to do the conversion.
I know I have been scolded by some saying that it is an abomination to do such a thing to such a fine gun like the 1100; however, I see that there are many others that have gone the same route.0 -
The best thing about the 1100 is the avalability of barrels. if you want to keep the long tube and cut a different one, you can. if you want to cut that one and maybe later get another one to replace it, you can. They aren't rare, nor are they very expensive compared to other brands/models.
If you can choke-tube it, do it for versatility. Some buckshot patterns better with some choke.
I have seen a few of the inertia-action shotguns (Benelli for example) fail the reliability test with low-recoil loads (since they use recoil to operate that makes perfect sense). I have not seen the gas guns fail that often with them, but then again they had factory 1100 or 11-87 barrels on them. Since yours is a long bird barrel being converted to short barrel defense gun, it might.
Like anything else used for defense, use it with what you intend to stake your life on to ensure it's 100% reliable. If it is not, find a load that meets your requirements in your 1100.0 -
The origional thread specifically refers to home defense which by definition is the longest shot you can make inside your residence. For the vast majority of us that would be in the area of 30" or less. At that range a choke or a bead on the barrel are moot points. The bead is more or less for appearance. Shooting at that range and closer will show you exactly what your gun will do. If ou don't have a barrel to cut down or you want to keep one of each, long and short, to change out (which is probably best) let me know I most likely have one that will fit your gun. 0 -

I also just acquired a 1100 bird gun that I would like to convert to a tactical gun as well. Would you have a barrel in the 18" to 22" range available?

My misunderstanding. I thought that ask the experts was for people looking for information to a specific issue and that the general discussion was for the bs. All the bs serves to do is confuse the person who is looking for the correct answer. Perhaps we should start the bs responses with "BS" then we can pass over them as not relevant.
