My guess is gramps shot out the factory bbl and hand a replacement fitted. Perhaps who ever did the rechamber messed up bad and required a new bbl instead of setting it back a thread or two.

Went deep into the safe to dig out my Rem 700 Varmit Special heavy barrel (#640xxx) from the early 70's with my old Weaver V12 on top. Lots of "critters" have fallen to that .22-250. Anyway, the barrel is clearly marked on the left side with the Rem Arms info including the caliber so if yours is not, something is "up" so it must have been rebarreled but why the caliber was not put on it is beyond me. Wouldn't shoot it until I ran it down. Great rifle, by the way.

Have you had it out of the stock?

The proper way to convert to AI is to set the barrel back and get a clean chamber with minimum headspace. That might have rotated the barrel more or less than a full turn and put the markings on the bottom.

Good point, to index the markings would cut WAY more than needed to get the desired throat and chamber for AI...

Either way, any gunsmith should know better to mark the caliber on a gun.[V]

If the markings aren't turned to the bottom, it needs marked!
