I've been looking for backup sights for an AR build I am working on and I always thought BUIS stood for 'Back Up Iron Sights'. Many of the of the listings are listing polymer sights as BUIS.

Have I been wrong all this time?

'Iron sights' is a generic term for non-optical type sights, not any sort of reference to what material they're made of.

You are right, Back Up Iron Sights is the correct term for the fold-down sights used on optic-equipped rifles (An AR for example). MagPul and others make them out of plastic. Magpul calls them "Magpul Back Up Sights" (MBUS)
