winchester model 55 takedown

Hello...I have a model 55 in 30wcf and it is a takedown model first year production. It has been refinished and looks brand new...could someone tell me the value?....thanks

    I do not have one of these in my collection and am a little uncertain how to break it down. I was told to pull the lever out from the side of the magazine and turn it counter clockwise. I tried this but it seems to be stuck and I don't want to break or bend anything. Is there something else I need to do to get the magazine to unscrew? Could be it has not been down for some time and need to let it soak in oil a little bit.

    I have one of those....It was old and misused when I acquired it....Soak it well with Kroil for a day or two...You'll be suprised....

    Unless you are a Gorilla, it is unlikely that you will bend or break the take down lever. Sometimes it takes a gentle sideways rap on the lever to break it loose.

    When you do get it loose, make sure to lift the lever to approximately 45-degrees as you rotate it past the underside of the barrel.

    Last, once you have the magazine tube pulled completely out, make sure that you open the lever fully before trying to rotate the barrel assembly 90-degrees to remove it from the receiver frame.

    Edit: I forgot to ask... what is the serial number on your Model 55 Take Down? I can determine the exact date of manufacture with it. I would also like to add it to my research survey.

    Bert H The serial number is 1039378. Looks maybe a 28. At any rate I did get it to open up. Last owner must have had a little extra shell x 100 around the house. Lots of blue left on the receiver but he decided to carve deep notches in the fore arm, i guess for each kill. I counted 24. I'd like to find a used one but given the limited number of these I don't think that will happen. I hate to put a new one on it.

    January 17th, 1929 is the date of manufacture, though it most likely has a "28" marked barrel on it. Speaking of the barrel, would you please check it to verify how it is marked (e.g. "28" or "29").

    Bert you were right, the barrel is marked 28. If you were me would you replace the fore arm that has the notches cut in it, 23 in all. Any chance of finding a used one is pretty slim. Gunstock.com would make one for me. The stock is in real good shape just a very few little bumps.

    I would leave the original forend stock on it. Those (24) notches are parts of its history as a hunting rifle.

    Winchesters and have no idea what a fair price would be. Seems like you can chuck the blue book any more. Can you give me some idea of what I could expect to pay for one of these?

    I agree with you... the Blue Book is nearly useless, and that was one of several motivating factors that encouraged me to write "The RED BOOK of WINCHESTER Values"

    In regards to the value of a Model 1885 low-wall, there are considerable number of factors that affect the value. The two major factors are the caliber/cartridge, and the specific variation. Are you looking for a rim fire or a center fire? Things like the barrel length, barrel size, barrel contour (shape), trigger type, sights, frame finished type (case color or blued), butt plate type, etc. all influence the final value number. Because it is nearly impossible to find two rifles that are identical, it is not possible to put an exact price on a "lo-wall".

    Bert, where would I find a copy of your book? Second I would be looking for a low wall 22 or any small caliber that I can get ammo for. I have way to many guns that I can not fire. I only have about 50 guns for the most part lever Winchesters.
