Take a look at this auction 325754946

The rifle is marked SporterII on the lower receiver. The box, the MATCHING serial number box says gov't model.

The seller does not answer any questions nor will they provide a photo of the top of the barrel which could prove what is the counterfeit part here.
Or is it a Colt mistake??

    The way things are going nowadays, I kind of doubt if the seller cares. He is going to get big bucks for it irregardless.

    I was at the range the other day. A guy their was bragging on how he got $1800, for one of his kitchen table builds. The collectors market for authentic Colt produced AR's, has been turned topsy turvey because of Nobama and his commie buddies.

    I don't blame the guy. He owns a gun shop, & is likely working 12 hours a day without a lunch break, selling guns as fast as he can move. He's posted lots of good photos, showing the gun from most angles, as well as parts markings, & box end label; few sellers do as good a job.

    The rifle looks righteous to me; true, he doesn't show the barrel markings, but everything that I can see looks right. Yes, the box end label doesn't match the model stamped on the lower. But, this was during the late 80's- early 90's when Colt was phasing out the "AR-15" name for the civilian line, restricting it to LE use. They may not have had SPORTER II labels, or the packer printed on the wrong one. Buy the gun, not the box end label.

    EDIT: Well, actually, he DOES specifically say it is a Sporter II. And, he doesn't claim it is a Govt Model, the 2nd line of the description says Govt Model Box. Anyone believing that he is buying a Govt Model when a photo clearly shows the receiver marked Sporter II deserves, well, a Sporter II. But, I would never bid on ANY auction with a reserve, or ANY auction with no return permitted, so I won't have much sympathy for the buyer if he is unhappy.

    It may be a 6420 model. Hangfire can chime in here. This was marked "Sporter II" on the lower, but was listed as a Government Model as it had an A-1 rear sight to comply with the request of a large LE agency so all their sight systems would be the same.

    Here is the problem. And it is not at all all right.

    If its a Colt Gov't model it will be stamped as such on the lower receiver of the rifle. Govt R 6550's pull a premium $$$ price because they are rare. This rifle is stamped Sporter II so IT IS NOT a Colt Gov't model. Govt model serials are in 200,XXX range and this box and rifle have 300,XXX range numbers. (6420's are carbine's with 16 inch barrels and collapsing stock with no FA)

    Since the box is a Gov't model box and has the serial number from a Sporter II TAPED to it is a PHONEY and somebody knowingly did it. And whoever buys it will have been scammed. and they will loose money when they try to sell it.

    The only way to tell if its really a real complete Sporter II is if they show the barrel markings from behind the flash hider. If the barrel is marked HBAR its absolutely not a Gov't model and it's not a Sporter II and it not a HBAR Sporter. Its a mismatched upper and lower.
    At any rate the rifle is not what it is being advertised as. And that's what I was trying to have verified.

    The 6420 is a carbine model.

    This rifle looks to be (to me) unmolested. As stated, pics of the barrel markings are the only thing keeping me from knowing 100%, but it looks legit otherwise. A quick email to the seller asking for the barrel markings would clear that up.

    The box/label issue doesn't help, as it doesnt appear to be the original box. However, like mentioned above, buyers should be bidding on the rifle, not the box or label. But, as a Colt collector, I understand he significance of the original box.

    That said, AR prices are retarded right now, and it doesn't surprise me that this rifle is at $1,800, with room to grow. I sure wouldn't bid on any AR's right now, as the market is sure to swell and glut in the months to come, and people who paid $2k for a basic AR are gonna be pissed when they can't get $1k for it in 6-8 months. That and I have enough AR's at the moment.
