Can you shoot 32 Winchester Special in a 32-40 cal rifle?

No, two different cartridge cases. The 32-40 has a greater base to shoulder taper than the 32 WS with the 32 WS having a greater shoulder diameter.

The only thing those two cartridges have in common , is the bullet diameter !

The cartridge rim diameter is the same size, and the cartridge OAL is very close to the same as well.
