Smith & Wesson Model 36 with ABV # Prefix
Smith & Wesson Model 36 with ABV serial # Prefix... What does it mean? Is this common? Thanks.

In the late 70's S & W revised the serial number format on their guns. They went to a (3) letter prefix in front of the regular numerical serial number. This prefix was changed for a different later letter in the alphabet, after a certain number of guns were manufactured.
To my knowledge all S & W handguns have had this (3) letter dating prefix since then. It make it much more confusing trying to date guns using this prefix then the old numerical serial number.
EDIT #1, I just checked the S & W book. Your revolver is a early example of this stupid nonsense. It was made in 1983.0 -
