I have some 7.62x39 ammo I'm trying to identify. I purchased it back in the early 90s. It's in a olive drab spam can. Markings include 7.62PSZgzs 12-23 43M 74-IV 660dB VUfl 3/74 51. Hopefully someone can help.

Not much to go by. You might want to start by posting photos:

That would help us identify the type of rim, or if it is rimless.

We usually measure ammunition with the inch system, even for metric rounds. We really need an exact measurement of the case length, the loaded length varies with the type bullet used. And the bullet diameter, just forward of the case. Use a micrometer for all measurements.

7.6mm sounds more like the DIAMETER of the bullet
    A 30-06 case is 63mm long
    A 7.62 NATO (308Win) case is 51mm long
A standard Mauser round (7mm or 7.92/8mm bullet) is 57mm long.

There are others, but those are the most common.

Metric nomenclature is bullet diameter x case length IE 7.62x51, 7.62x63, 7.92x57 ect. Note that is JUST the case length, NOT the overall length
