Winchester Proof Marks

My friend has an 1873 SRC he is working on, when he removed the wood he found (7) proof marks on the bottom of the barrel. Why was this done?

  what does the circle PW mean on a winchester barrel, and what does it mean if that circle has a P inside a circle underneath it? Both are on the barrel where it meets the receiver. thanks

  There should only be one actual proof stamp on the bottom of the barrel, a "VP" in an oval. The rest of the markings are simple inspection marks, or the steel makers marks. Can you post a clear detailed picture of the markings?

  As I do not own the rifle, I cannot get a picture soon.
  There are several standard winchester proof marks in a row on the bottom of the barrel. Just like the one pictured:

  Sure... that marking should not ever be on the bottom of the barrel. On Post May 1905 Winchesters, it should be marked on the top of the barrel (once), and on the top of the frame ring (once).

  They could be "aftermarket" proof stamps. Sounds like someone was practicing. [V][V]

  As Cartod suggested, somebody was practing on that barrel with a fake stamp.
