Iver Johnsons .32
I have just purchased an Iver Johnsons Safety Automatic Double Action .32 with a six inch barrel. The serial number on the trigger guard is 51682 and the number on the frame under the grips is 51683. The numbers are one diget apart. Any way to tell the DOM and does this "unique" numbering make this piece "rare" and more valuable?

Unless it's an antique first model, there should be a letter preceding the serial number on butt frame under the left grip that dates the gun.
What patent dates are marked, and where located?0 -

The letter preceding the number on the grips is a "C". The patent dates are on the butt of the frame and are "June 16, 96, Aug. 25,96 , Sept6, 04 Pats Pending"

Serial number C51683 with those patent dates identify it as a large frame 3rd model made in 1911.
If a .32, it should be a 6-shot in .32 S&W Long caliber, with a coil mainspring.
The one digit serial mis-match may be a factory error, not significant to most users, and might make it less desirable to a collector.
If you remove the cylinder, there should also be a serial number on underside of the top strap.0 -
Number under the top strap is 51683 same as the number on the frame. I had no idea that the serial number was also on the barrel!
