Failure to fire with Rem 22's

Went to the range Friday with a friend. We took, among others, his and my Ruger 10-22's and a Colt Woodsman. I just grabbed what ammo I had on the shelf, my friend had Remington Thunderbolts. My ammo turned out to be a box of Rem's and a box of Super-X. Firing all three guns, we had NUMEROUS mis-fires with the Remington ammo, I'd estimate 2 rounds per 10 round mag. Zero misfires with the Super-X. I don't believe there was a mag full with ANY of the guns that didn't have at least one misfire, and firing pin imprints all looked OK. Is this common with Rem rim-fire ammo? If so, I'm dumping what Remington ammo I've got and going with CCI.

    I personally have had a lot of problems in the past with Remington Golden Bullets, not so much with Thunderbolts.

    Lot of it I attribute to sensitivity of the priming compound that Remington uses. In pistols that have clean chambers and very heavy firing pin impacts, there are almost no misfires. But if the chamber/breechblock area has a lot of fouling residue, and the firing pin impact is marginal. Your likely going to have a lot of problems with Remington ammo.

    most likely someone somewhere Dropped this ammo between the factory and you shooting it. Remington by far has more trouble with dry brittle priming compound in their ammo then any other brand. To see what I am talking about take a loaded round that you tried to shoot that did not go off. With bullet pointing up use a pair of pliers To slowly twist the bullet to remove it from brass case . Now in strong daylight pour the powder that is in the case into the open palm of your hand. You should see Gray flakes of powder. BUT you will also see greenish yellow parts of primer that have broken off from the rim. this is what caused the DUD. now take a new box remove ten bullets and observe powder. Then Take the rest of the box in your hand and slap the box on a table top . It does not have to be really hard just about what it would be like if it fell off the table to the floor. Now remove 10 of these bullets and compare the powder in these 10 to the first ten. . You will prove to yourself how Little it takes to ruin Remington 22 LR ammo.[:(!][V]

    Yours is a very common complaint with Remington "golden bullet" .22LR for at least the past 5-6 years....very frustrating indeed.

    I had the same issue with Remington 22 ammo 30 years ago and ceased purchasing it then. Have never given it a second chance.

    I had just the opposite, I've had good luck with the Golden bullets but the Thunderbolts gave me a problem.

    I've solved the problem altogether by switching to Federals

    I haven't purchased any 22s within the last five years or so, but I use them extensively for live fire in hunter education classes- at the time I bought a lot of Peters lead, which I suppose is the same as Remington discount. Out of a brick of 500 I'd average about 5 FTFs. All had a strong firing pin indent. After the students were gone I'd re-fire them two or three times, none ever fired. I guess 1% failure isn't too bad if we we're talking about hitting baseballs, but with ammunition I'd prefer a 0% failure rate.

    I've got a bulk box of Winchester's and a couple 100's of CCI, so the Rem's are going in the club's junk barrel next time I'm at the range. If I can find some more Win's or CCI's at Wallyworld or wherever, I'll stock up but I'm done with Rem's.[V] Misfires ARE NOT something I will, or should, tolerate.

    edit: like country farmer I switched to Federals, don't think I ever had a problem with the old lightnings in the blue boxes.

    I also topped buying Remington 22's altogether due to horrid quality.
