colt 1878

I have a colt i think is a 1878 but this has a square butt not the birds head every thing is the same but this did they ever make one. the grips are marked colt.

  Post a pic..there is a sticky on the front page on how to do that. I don't believe the 1878 DA Colt had square grips. The 1892 did but looks nothing like the 1878 model.

  Is it possible to get close up photos of the markings on your revolver, other then the ones on the grips?
  
  During the late 19th, early 20th Century time frame many copies/knock-offs of Colt revolvers were made in Europe. Primarily in Spain, but some in Belgium also.
  
  Many were made in some numbers from family workshops. Primarily for sale in Latin America.

  Something just looks wrong to me...the cylinder base pin and that area with the circle with the pin (area between the recoil shield and hammer does look off to me. Looks a little different from other 1878's). I've also never seen a square butt 1878..not saying it never existed but I've never seen one. Look at this Colt and you will see what I mean.

  Looks like an 1878 with a "Bubba" grip strap modification.
  
  Remove the grips and look for a splice and welds or brazing.
  
  The grips are from a later New Service or other Colt.
  
  The sharp point at top of frame behind the hammer has also been ground down.
