DPMS AR-10 Question

Forgive me as I'm posting from a mobile and am traveling so a new topic is easier than a thorough search but....

Does a DPMS AR take only proprietary DPMS mags? Or will armalite, rock river, etc mags also function smoothly? I know it's likely the same for both but I'm interested in specifically the AR-10

Bonus question: I could be way off base with this one but I seem to remember at least one AR-10 manufacturer's rifle being compatible also with certain FAL and/or M1A clips as well. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

    No you are correct...almost. The DPMS, will take the original SR-25 magazine, as designed by Stoner. There are some AR-10's out there that take the FAL magazines, but I have heard of them being problematic from time to time. The DPMS is the way to go, and I know for sure that at least 3 manufactures use that magazine...Stoner/Armalite, DPMS, and POF.

    Your almost right the DPMS will also use the ORIGINAL AR10 mag as manufactured by Stoner as well as his SR25 mag. That is the AR10 waffle mag. That mag will not work in the new style Armalite AR10.

    As of this year ARMALITE is producing a new model AR10A that uses the Magpul, DPMS, Stoner SR25 and POF magazines.


    CWINN The Armalite as produced over the last 15 years or so will only use modified M14 mags. Armalite sells them and it is the only mag that works in that rifle. As of late 2012 Armalite is making a new modified receiver that is known as the AR10A this new rifle will use all the other proprietary mags, like for the DPMS etc.
    Now that makes an Armilite a better buy for most folks that were once worried about expensive magazines that you had to get from Armalite.

    CWINN If you look at the rifle near the bottom of my signature line. The AR10 in the picture has the what I was referring to waffle magazine inserted in the mag well. That mag fits the ORIGINAL STONER designed AR10 the Stoner SR25 as well as the DPMS. Although it was an Armalite designed magazine it only fits the original and not the new one.

    Bushmaster made a 308 AR that used FN mags, but it was dropped many years ago.

    Rock River bought the rights when Bushmaster dropped it. RR fixed the problems and have been selling them ever since. I have 2 of them, they are great guns.

    I've got the DPMS Recon in .308 and mine takes magpul mags without problems.
