I've never loaded this caliber Ammo was always so cheap... now not so much

What bullet diameter should be used out of a mini 14 or an AR-180 Sterling made Armalite

  You should look to use 50 to 55 grain .224 caliber bullets. The heavier/longer ones will not stabilize in slower (1/12) twists used in the older 5.56/.223 Remington guns.
  
  There are dozens upon dozens of good loads for your 5.56 semi-autos found on just about every powder company website or in their manuals.

  When introduced the Mini 14 had a 1/10 barrel. In the late 80's Ruger switched to a 1/7 twist, but then in the mid-90's decided to change to 1/9.
  
  The original AR180 had a 1/12, but the newer AR180B has a 1/9 barrel.

  Correct, the changes Ruger did to improve their ability to handle heavier .224's has gone from one extreme to the other, now the middle. Sterling made the Ar-180's from the late 1970's through about 1983/84 I believe, those should all be 1-12's.
  
  I should've added the caveat that instead of loading different rounds for different guns, (We don't know the Ruger's vintage, I have both the slower and faster twist models) it's easier to load the 50-55 gr bullets that work fine in both of these guns.
