It would be best prior to getting a letter from Cody. If you could post quality close-up photos to the forum.

Instructions for posting photos, at this link.

It appears to be a circle 4 or a close C with the 4 inside. Most brands are registered by county, I believe, the gun is about 1900 made. I was hoping to get a starting point, not that I like my chances much.
    Thanks

For the little cost of the Cody letter, it is a worthwhile investment. Especially if your rifle letter's.

I am sure that Bert H, will be along shortly tohelp with this. When it comes to Winchester's, he is the man. If he does not appear in the next 24 hours, he is listed as a moderator. Click on his profile, and send him a direct e-mail.

In Washington state brands are registered with the state. There is a state brand registary, they can and most time will guide you in historical research. I beleave Montana brands are state registered also.

I am away at work at present. I asked to get some photos, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Why am I not suprised.

As far as the brand, I guess it could be a lazy circle 4 , depending if the gun was vertical or horizontal when applied. I'll have to look at getting a letter I think. Might as well do the reat at the same time.
    Thanks

Is there anyway I can find out what state or area the gun was originally sold to, without the whole documented letter from Cody.
    Thanks.....Chip

Winchester letters normally do not show a shipping destination.
