S&W 6904 FTF FTGIB updated
Recently as christmas I took my 6904 out to shoot a bit, and it failed to fire and failed to go into battery multiple times.
The girl friend would have FTGIB (failures to go into battery) before said incident, figured limp wristing.
I ordered a new recoil spring thru wolff springs the old one looked bent and was probably a full inch shorter than the new factory standard spring.
Do I have my correction? Or should I be looking for something else as well?
(russian silver bear ammo) The gun never had any trouble with it before.
Cleaned the firing pin channel full of filth and the spring had rusted inside some. I also replaced the firing pin spring it came with the new recoil spring. That should take care of everything.
Ran two mags through it over easter. Had one magazine hang up the follower. Not sure what that was about but it seems fine. Seemed to shoot good too. I would like to get a complete re-spring kit. It seems the guns life in florida prior to me getting it was rough on them. Trouble is there are about 3 different spring kits for this model and I don't know what I need

Maybe we could help you if you explained what a 6904 was, and what are FTGIB failures?

but I hate SW autos pre M&P so I cant fix it

A lack of slide/frame lube could be an issue, maybe old gunk in the chamber and/or firing pin channel causing the FTF?
Sounds like the spring might be part of it, also the mag should be cleaned and the spring examined.
Once you re-spring and clean it well, try a variety of different ammos to see if that was part the reason as well. Let us know the result [:)]0 -

You tell us whether or not this fixes the problem. It certainly can't hurt!
IIWY, I'd also strip down, clean thoroughly (including brushing out the rails), and lube.
In terms of ammo, you may be using the same brand, but a different lot of ammo may be to slightly different spec and function differently. If you have any, try some different (ie brass cased) ammo and see if that helps.0 -
Sounds like a good cleaning was in order. Now run a few different brands of ammo through it and let us know if the fix worked [8D], if not, we'll put our heads together and figure something else out. 0 -

If the firing pin spring and channel were in that sort of shape it's time for a TOTAL DISASSEMBLY and cleaning.
While the gun is completely apart it's a good opportunity to head off a couple of potential issues...
Consider bringing things back to zero by dropping in fresh springs throughout. It won't be terribly costly and is a wise investment if you wish the gun to be reliable.
If the gun has been used rather than just sitting around, with this design S&W semiauto it's a good idea to note how far down the decocker lever travels before hammer fall occurs. If it's not dropping until the lever is bottomed out this indicates the sear release lever has become worn, which is not an uncommon issue if the gun has seen lots of range time - such as a former cop gun.
Wear to this part will eventually result in the hammer not dropping at all when the decocker is manipulated.
The part is cheap, but does require minor fitting. Only armorer level skills are required though, no full-blown gunsmith necessary.0
