Remington 550-1

Any 550 owners out there? I have a chance to pick one up for $100.
Perfect bore, missing magazine tube, but otherwise about 85% wood and metal. Any major pittfalls with this design? Functioning? Breakdowns, etc. It looks like a nice winter clean up project.
Any comment appreciated.

  I have a 550-1. It sounds that the "stuff" is foreign and is best if it is removed. For lubrication just keep whatever you use LIGHT, the main function is preventing rust unless you are shooting shorts. The idea of the floating chamber was that if shorts were fired pressure was in contact with the chamber walls so the chamber would push back to operate the action. With long rifle cartridges the case covered the floating chamber as well as some of the fixed chamber, so there was no pressure to push back on the floating chamber; but with the long rifles there was sufficient rearward push to operate the action, so the floating chamber remained in place.
  
  So if you're shooting long rifle 22s, just keep it clean and watch that the plug/spring at the back of the action dosn't work loose and it should outlast you. They are not a particularly attractive rifle but they'll provide service until well after the cows come home.[:)]

  Most likely, it was a graphite bearing grease, or something that a lot of old timer's used, called Gunslick...the original Gunslick product.

  A lot of 22 ammo is quite dirty powder wise. Also sheds lead residue from the very soft, unplated, swaged bullets. I wouldn't put any vicious oil or grease in that floating chamber.
  
  If you really feel that you have to lube it, there is a Moly product called Dri Slide. It's Moly particles suspended in volatile solvents. You shake it up real good then apply it. When the solvents evaporate it leaves a microscopic coating of Molly on and in the metal parts.
  
  Dry Slide dates back to the Viet Nam war, it got popular with our troops in the Jungle for dry lubing their M 16's.

  I also have a 550-1. Lube it lightly. They are really versatile 22 rifles.

  Whatever you do, do NOT take the trigger mechanism apart. ESPECIALLY do NOT touch what looks like a big screw on he bottom of the action. Use spray Gunscrubber (and safety glasses) Have 4 of these- they are great little rifles- and suprisingly accurate.

  Other than making sure that the screw is correctly put back (not-crossthreaded) I've had no problems taking a 550-1 completely apart- so what's the big deal?

  i personally believe the Remington 550-1 is the best semi-auto .22 rifle ever made !!
  
  cleaning it is a breeze, i shoot CB's in my back yard, they are quiet, never had a complaint from any neighbor.
  
  keep that floating chamber clean and you can shoot the low powered ammo easily.
  
  go easy on the CLP and you will bee in great shape.
