AR accuracy.

What should I expect for accuracy out of a basic, no-frills, iron-sighted (A1 rear sight) AR-15, at 100 yards? Every part is brand new, including the 20" "pencil" barrel.

  It's only going to be as accurate as the person pulling the trigger. If you are a neophyte with firearms, don't expect to be Davy Crockett the first time you go shooting. Get in a lot of trigger time and do a lot of practicing, perferably with a .22 rimfire conversation unit so you won't go broke buying 5.56 X 45 ammo.

  I'd be happy with 4". I'd be ecstatic with less than 1 inch. Clean carefully and choose your ammo to match the twist rate. Thin tubes heat quickly.

  Provided that you use 55grain or less bullets so they stabilize with the slower twist, and you use proper technique (don't muscle the rifle or chase the bullseye) it's possible to get 2 inch groups at 100 yards.

  It depends on the quality of the fire arm, the shooter, ammunition, and sighting system. With iron sights, you can expect 1-4 inches, using the 55 grain ammo. Step up to the 62=69 grain ammo, and that will improve. Most AR-15 rifles and carbines have a fast twist of 1 in 7, or 1 in 9, conversley as a slow twist of 1 in 12, or 1 in 14.
  
  Add a good scope to this, and your rifle should be able to hold within 1-2 inches, and possibly better, once you get your trigger rythem down.

  On a basic no-frills rifle the stock and the trigger are going to hold you back accuracy wise. The AR-15 platform has about taken over serious service rifle target shooting. The potential for excellent accuracy is there.

  As long as you're using the correct bullet weight for the particular model (barrel twist rate) you can expect to group 2 in. at 100 yds. with USGI ammunition.
  
  If it helps you any, per US military specifications the maximum acceptable dispersion is 4 in. at 100m. Rifles no longer capable of this are deemed unserviceable.

  The Army required 4 moa. However, it is much more typical that they will shoot 2 moa or better right off the rack. Shooting better than that is up to you and how well you upgrade parts.

  The barrel I'm using has the old 1:12 twist. I've been stocking up on 55gr FMJ's and LC brass. Like I said, no frills. Basic LPK, nothing really match-spec, The BCM Gunfighter charging handle is pretty much the "fanciest" part that went into the build.
  
  Just something fun to mess around with.[:D][^][8D]

  your results may be different but I've found that seating bullets to the max length that will fit in the magazine and seated over a medium load of powder gives me my best accuracy. This is with winchester 748 powder, using the cheapest bullets I can find, and mongrel brass. Accuracy is average 1" or better at 50yds. I don't shoot my ar any further than that. I have my reasons why.
  
  For real precision, I use same powder, cci br4 primers, lapua brass, and berger bullets. But those are for one of my bolt rifles and will never get fired from my ar.
  
  I just got a gunfighter charging handle for Christmas and absolutely love it. I wanted something more durable after I managed to break the factory one. The BCM Far exceeds my expectations.
