Rebarrel Question
I have a Savage 110 in .270 it only has a 22" barrel on it I would like to rebarrel it with a new Krieger chromemoly barrel what length would give the .270 it's best performance? I would like to maybe put a 26" tube on it.
It will be an Elk and large game rifle.

Is it fairly easy to reabarrel to a "family" cartridge? For example a.308 to .358 win. or 350 Rem to 6.5 Rem Mag. since the case is the same, just necked up or down. Thanks! 0 -

you are correct, if the bolt face size is the same and the overall length of the ctg is in the same group ie. short action, long action ect then it is much easier. 0 -

Understand that it will be a rare day when a gunsmith accepts the challenge of putting a long action cartridge in a short action receiver. The opposite though is not entirely uncommon since the military uses the concept.
It's going to depend on who is doing the work. If it's an amateur with little or no training then I say no simply from the standpoint of the lack of experience.
But if it's a trained gunsmith then the same bolt face and cartridge length make less work for the 'smith. Feeding geometry will vary with the change in caliber, although most average hunters won't know the difference. There are some finesse steps that get used when going up or down in caliber.
Bear in mind that you will need to check on a secure a supply of cases if you choose to re-barrel/re-chamber to another cartridge. There is a supply of .350 Rem. Mag. in the pipeline right now but you can't buy 6.5mm Rem. Mag. to save your soul. Remington and Winchester have reduced many older standard cartridges to what they refer to as either 'seasonal' which means they make one run a year or 'obsolete' and they might make a run at some point.

Thanks for your reply. A couple that interest me are the .308 Win to .358 Win and the 8mm Rem Mag. to .358 STA.

Simple as long as you make sure the feed ramp is shaped to allow for the larger diameter bullets. I know some folks will say to just do it but there are subtle enhancements to massaging the feed ramp and rails ever so slightly.
8mm Rem Mag. to .358 STA:
This one is even more simple and probably as close to a direct re-barrel as possible since the step up is from .323" to .358" bullet diameter. The shoulder angle is minimal but it never hurts to check the feed ramp anyway.
