varmint load for 45 long colt
A friend that lived in Colorado told me he used to load 45 long colt to shoot mice on the ranch by using a light load of powder,a fiber wad,some #9 shot and a copper gas check crimped over the top.This sounds like it would be just the ticket for critters around the pole barn.Do any of you guys see a potiential problem? Your opinions are always welcome.

Other than a choked TC 44 Mag the best shot pistol I ever had was a 25-5 S&W 8 3/8. Printed nice pattern at 10 yards. Powder Unique don't recall the charge, gas check cup down, gas check cuo up, shot 7.5 or smaller, gas check cup down, crinp.
Wax bullets powered by primer thunp fairly hard. Watch for build up, clean often.0 -

Take any 30-06 basic case, Cut it off to cylinder length. Resize case in a .41 mag. die just enough to headspace on the newly created shoulder. Wads are easily made from heavy craft paper or card board. Cut them out with a sharpened .45 case with the primer removed so you can poke the wads out. load 4-6 grains B.E. or unique. Push a few wads over the powder and fill with shot. Cap with another wad and wax or glue. You now have a full length brass shot shell almost equal to a 2 1/2" .410. Rimless Ejection is no problem with a single action. With a double action poke the case out with a wooden dowel. 0 -
Sounds like misuse of an otherwise fine "varmint" gun- for varmnts with two legs but otherwise act like a cross between a rat and a snake- a 250 grain hard cast at about 1000 fps ought to be about right. 0 -
How about pattern results when load is allowed to spin?
Aren't capsules better for reduced spin of the shot?
I have a few boxes of Remco shot capsules for 45LC I've never tried but I have experimented with 38Spl(Speer?) capsules loaded with #4 shot.
They have meaningful power and a reasonable pattern out of a 2" Chief, giving penetration of 1x12 boards at about 10 ft.
I don't believe in fine shot out of a handgun. There's too little energy in each pellet.0 -
Other than cost savings, is there an advantage to using the 30-06 brass over using a .444 Marlin brass ?
It's one of the projects I haven't gotten around to, making .45LC shot shells out of rifle brass and I was hoarding some .444 Marlin brass to use. Didn't realize a 30-06 which is a whole lot easier to come by and cheaper, would work as well.

The shot capsuls, actually add spin to the shot, as they grip the rifling better. That is what I have found with the 22LR shot capsuls, vs. the crimped type of 22LR shot. I will tell you, that if you are using these inside, the 22 crimped shot shell is the way to go. You can get a box of 50 of them for around $12.00, and they don't mess nothing else up but the mouse of squirrel. Yes, they are only good to about 15 feet maximum.
Just a thought, rather than using the 45.
