Can a factory Ruger 30 round mag be brought into up state New york for use in a legal pre ban mimi 14 folder

    The gun is pre ban. How would you know if the mag is pre ban? It is unmarked. I did not think Ruger introduced a 30 rnd mag till after the AWB expired

    By unmarked I meant undated and not LE. It is a factory Ruger mag

    You make a good point. Just about every mag ever made in this country before the ban has no date or legality marking stamped on it; & you can probably say the same about most post-ban mags.

    However, there are some mags, such as some Glocks, that may have an identifiable manufacturing difference if pre-ban, or you might have an original sales receipt for a mag bought pre-ban. Otherwise, in NYS, the presumption is that your mag is not pre-ban.

    NYS has laws concerning guns, & they have laws concerning mags; it doesn't matter when your gun was imported into the state, the mag laws are not changed by that.

    So, the best answer to your question is:
    Only if it's Pre-ban (Sept., 1994). Otherwise, it's a felony to possess.

    Greetings Golferboy,

    To the best of my knowledge, any pre-ban Ruger magazines were all 20 rounds.

    What was left just before the ban, and folding stcks, Ruger sawed in half, at the old patriarch, wanted nothing to do with labels of assault weapon.

    With that said, I do not believe, there were any pre Septmber 1994, 30 round magazines.


    All of the 20 rounder's I believe had Ruger's ID on them. There were some aftermarkets though, that could have been 30 rounder's.

    I'd have to look it up, but I'm about 98% certain Ruger had both 20 and 30-round magazines pre-1994; they were NOT generally marketed to the public but were a law enforcement sale item only (not for any legal reasons, just a choice Ruger made). Some did "trickle down" to the public, but were always expensive.

    As for any state police department having "expert knowledge" on the subject of firearms, or firearm accessories, I'd be highly doubtful of that. They may think they know things -- and that could be just as bad for a person caught with something that might be contraband -- but generally, law enforcement divisions on state and local levels are miserably ignorant about both firearms themselves and the laws regulating them.

    Their ignorance might cost you a ton in legal fees. They get to spend the taxpayer's dollars supporting their wrong position; you'll be paying for it out of your pocket to correct their errors. Sometimes, that's just not a worthwhile fight.

    Might doesn't make right, but it allows them to get away with a lot of BS and waste other people's time and money.

    The Police have a booklet with pre-ban and post-ban markings. I've seen it. You should call Ruger to verify when it was made.

    Competentone is correct.

    Ruger did make 30 rounders prior to 94, I have some from back in those days. They were packaged in white cardboard boxes with red printing. Most were sold to LE but many made it into the civilian market.

    yes, they did make pre-ban 30rd mags, as i bought some when i bought my ac-556 back in 1991. i paid 125.00 per mag, and was happy to get them. they were not marked with the date if my memory serves me.
