Winchester Models 12 and a 42
My friend is visiting family and out came Dad's guns. He is bringing back a model 12 in 20 guage that he shot quite a bit when he was a kid. And he is also bring back a 42 which was too big/long for him to shoot as was the 12 guage when he was young. His Father bought all three new. He thinks they were bought in the late 50s, early 60s. They all have been shot alot and may have been hunted with. The 12 guage is staying with his brother so I only have one picture of it, I will get better pics of the 12 and 410. The pictures I have are not that great but will do for now. One of the questions is of the rib on the 20 guage, it looks different. And of the wood on all of them. Does anything stand out to any of you experts. Like I said I will post some better pictures when he returns with them. I think he said that all three of them said Skeet on them. The wood looks nicer than most stocks I see.
Edit #1: The rib on the 20 gauge is the one he said looked different. He said it was taller! I have a macro lense so we will all see. He will be back before the new year and more pictures will be forthcoming. Ruff-snow: They were well taken care of. He knows his Dad bought them new and that they have not been refinished. They have been stored in his brothers safe for 20 years and his fathers safe since the early 1970s when he and his brother went to the air force accademy. Some people take care of their guns! I have my Grandfathers Savage 99. He bought it new in 1932, hunted with it in the snow of wisconsn every year till the late 50s. My Mom gave it to me in the 1980s, its the nicest one I have seen. I said they were shot, not abused.

Think I got them all on.
Just did a preview and I don't know why some of them turned out larger than others. They were all taken with the same phone and sent to me. I hate it when this happens. Sorry

Great looking wood and you are correct that is NOT normal grade wood one of them at least is XX grade or better[^][:p] 0 -
Looks like a Simmons rib on the 42 0 -
If as you say, they have been shot alot and hunted with since the late 50's/60's time frame, somethings wrong. Although the quality of the photos are poor, they appear to be into to good of condition to reflect substantial use over a 50 year period, IMHO. 0 -
Back then "Simmons" dulled down the top of the receiver when installing there ribs. 0 -
My Guss is that they are WINCHESTER Ribs; Because Most SIMMONS were round post and SIMMONS put there Name on theirs.
I just had a Man talk to me for over 30 min. about M-12 Ribs.
He worked for WINCHESTER for 41-yrs. and His job was installing Ribs on M-12's. The Top rib may be round post,but if it is SIMONS then it should have their name on it.

If you will read the fine print on the 42 rib, it says Simmons Kansas City 0 -

I too have a model 42 Skeet gun with a Simmons rib. The Simmons name on it is very faint and small. Mine was modified from 2 1/2" to 3". The chamber length marking on the barrel was remarked. I didn't know that when I bought the shotgun but collectors quickly pointed it out. 0 -
SIMMONS and WINCHESTER worked togather on in stalling Ribs,
WINCHESTER made the Guns and SIMMONS made the Ribs.The only difference was WINCHESTER liked the square post. SIMMONS USED Mosly round post.0
