Broken 1911
Hello everyone. Been a while since I been here. Divorce has kept me away for awhile. Anyway, I have a 1911A2(doublestack magazine) that has a problem with the hammer falling when the slide is released. This obviosly is not good because this could either cause a slam fire condition or in the least cause me to have to cock the hammer back after each shot which aint cool neither. All parts are stock and unmolested and the gun has only been apart for cleaning. I have only put 50 rounds through this gun too. I am competent enough to fit and replace parts which I plan to do anyway, I'm just curious of y'alls diagnosis because I usually only see this with a modified weapon. Thanks for the help folks!

Usually Sear/Hammer interface problem. What make is your pistol? Does it utilize standard 1911 internal parts? If it doesn't could be problems fixing it.
There have been a number of Hi-cap semi-autos that have been marketed over the years. That appear cosmetically similar to the 1911 Colt externally, but don't utilize standard Colt parts internally.0 -
Start with sear and notch on hammer. Perhaps something is preventing full engaugement. Crud in notch or trigger channel. 0 -
Three leaf spring incorrectly installed ot somehow gotten bent so it does not engage the disconnector correctly with enough tension the left leaf is bent and not putting enough tension. or sear nose chipped or hammer hooks rounded off . 0 -
The first thing to try is more sear spring tension; the middle leaf should be bent tighter against the disconnector.
After that you are getting into gunsmith work on the hammer and or sear.0 -
Others have touched on what the issue may be.
I will emphatically state. DO NOT fire that pistol until it will repeatedly pass a safety function test. The risk of a doubleup or even a mag dump is high and could prove dangerous to you and bystanders. There are also others out there who might report you to the BATFE for having an automatic weapon.0 -
Hammer follow on slide release and stopping on the half-cock comes from the trigger inertially bumping the disconnect and rolling the sear out of the hooks. The sear resets and grabs the half-cock notch.
The heavier/more massive the trigger, the more likely it is to happen.
Use your fingertip to hold the trigger forward before releasing the slide, and it won't follow. Or...hold it full rearward to get the disconnect out of the equation. Either way...if the hammer doesn't follow, it's probably a simple matter of adding more tension to the center leg of the sear spring.
Even if the hammer follows all the way to the firing pin stop, it won't fire the gun unless the firing pin spring is seriously weak or damaged, or the firing pin is too long. It can't. In order to fire with the slide drop, the hammer has to hold full cock and jar off. That comes from a completely different problem.0 -
